Lord Ganesha is considered as the God who removes all obstacles. He is the god of intellect, wisdom and art. People worship Lord Ganesha before starting any work so that the work finishes without any difficulties.

According to our scriptures, Ganesha was blessed by Lord Shiva that he will be worshipped first. It is believed starting any puja without worshipping Lord Ganesha will be fruitless.

Lord Ganesha is called the Lord of all ganas. He has 21 Ganas -    
Gajasya, Vighnaraj, Lambodar, Shivatmaj, Vakratund, Shurpkarna, Kubj, Vinayak, Vighnanash, Vaman, Vikat, Sarvdevat, Vighnaharta, Drumak, Sarvadevadhidev, Ekdant, Krishnapindag, Bhalachandra, Ganeshwar and Ganap.
