Ganpati Bappa moreya, moreya, moreya re!” The city on Wednesday reverberated with this familiar chant as devotees offered flowers and sweets to the god of prosperity on Ganesh Chaturthi. Devotees were seen thronging flower-bedecked pandals to offer aarti in the morning.

Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated all over the city, but the celebrations were concentrated largely in two areas ——the MECON Community Hall and Vishwakarma Lane on Mahatma Gandhi Road. “For the past 28 years we have been celebrating this festival. We had aarti in the morning, followed by mahaprasad. There were more than 600 people to offer prayers,” said a priest, Pinaki Pani, adding, “we will have aarti again in the evening. Tomorrow the idols will be immersed with devotees inviting the lord to return next year to bring happiness in our lives.”

Diksha, a girl who was decorating an idol, said, “I worship Ganesh at home. I am here since morning decorating the lord with garlands and jewellery. Many devotees come here to offer prayers. My friends are also with me and enjoying the mahaprasad.”

Ankush Singh, a student, said, “I go pandal-hopping with friends. I am here with my family and friends. We offered prayers and enjoyed the mahaprasad.”
